Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to gain traction in many industries worldwide even as technology becomes more accessible and usable within different working environments. It is evident that AI has been used to a great extent in today’s buildings to enhance and modernize aspects such as home and corporate building security, outlooks and efficiency. Many companies have managed to successfully implement AI to create working environments which provide comfort and ideal conditions for achieving maximum productivity.

With this continuous advancement, however, AI is set to become even more useful in construction beyond simply vamping up already constructed buildings. Developers are now looking to incorporate artificial intelligence and machine learning software into machines which perform construction tasks. This technology will help to make building houses more efficient by reducing time required for construction, utilizing resources adequately and minimizing the chances for errors and accidents in construction sites. The following are some of the ways in which AI can improve the construction industry.

CATEGORIES OF AI IMPLEMENTATION

Peter Debny, and applications specialist at Oasys Ltd. defines four main categories of AI implementation in construction projects.

Construction Planning

The inception of every building begins with a well drawn-out plan by architects which is instrumental in guiding the individuals actualizing and carrying out the construction. Artificial intelligence use will extend from helping out in drawing up plans to creating more graphic presentations of structures before they are put up. If technology can be implemented to test out factors surrounding the site of construction, they can help architects to draw up more viable blueprints for buildings that will be beautifully designed and that will be robust and long-lasting. AI can also be utilized by engineers to examine the proposed blueprints and determine what kinds of materials would be best to carry out the construction.

The use of AI in the planning phase of construction will improve efficiency dramatically. “Before this advancement, these processes would take weeks – now they can be done in one day,” Peter notes. By reducing the time span, these technologies can reduce resources such as time and money set apart for labor during planning.

Construction Administration

AI can be implemented to manage workflow within construction systems. Constructions have sometimes suffered from lack of consistent flow of work, which has resulted in failure to meet deadlines and sometimes even contract cancellation. By including AI in administrative tasks, construction managers can gain more control by using less efforts. Databases can be implemented where workers will be required to fill in their details. AI systems could be used to track whether or not a worker showed up. Sick days and vacancies will be easier to report and adjust. Peter suggests that the AI will understand that the task has to be reassigned to another worker.

AI can also be implemented to monitor the performance of supply chain in construction sites. Richard Robinson of Infrastructure Intelligence notes that “A fragmented supply chain with sub-optimal integration across different services is among the top concerns.” Through intelligent machines, each crucial construction phase can be analyzed and aligned to ensure that every party involved in construction meets its objective and is rewarded accordingly.

Construction Methodology and Procedure

AI can facilitate data collection and analysis for construction purposes. By accessing and examining blueprints, plans, budgets and implementation methods of past construction projects, AI machines can present construction companies with viable solution that will enable the construction of safe structures while maintaining cost-effectiveness and modern styling.

Ai can drive construction processes even more closely by being actively involved in construction. Machines which have a network of sensors guiding them will be able to perform functions such as correct ratios for mixing concrete, accurate laying of bricks and adequate use of mortar. Transportation of construction materials such as metal beams and their subsequent installation can also be made more effective by using these technologies.

Post-Construction Management

AI has been gaining popularity in post-construction uses lately. Installation of smart lights, intelligent security systems and the emergence of IoT has enabled many components within buildings to be actively involved in keeping in-house environments ideal. Perhaps in the future we will see an even further investment in AI use within constructions, such as the presence of sensors within walls which can identify the presence of cracks and worn out material. Such systems could be used for early detection of problems in structures before they become potentially dangerous to the individuals who are using them.

AI is constantly solidifying its position in many industries, and the same can be said for construction works. Advanced intelligent technology will be applied in construction projects to develop more practical and efficient building plans. They will also allow architects to stretch limits of creativity while maintaining high safety and robustness required in buildings.
